California Season Calendar

Summer 2021

June 20th to September 21st

Edible food gets tossed each year due to an expiration date and its appearance. This shares an interesting national issues how anyone can be influenced to dispose food as waste.  Each year, about 40% of all food in the U.S goes uneaten. That means America throws away an estimate of $165 billion worth of food according to the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) found 2020. So, what can we do?

Food is labeled to help estimate a specific expiration date to advice customers to avoid consuming spoiled foods. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) states “that even if the expiration date on your food item has passed, it should be still safe to eat if handled properly until the spoilage is evident”.  This is an reasonable foods fact to observe physical features of identifying decomposition signs of odor, decolorization, and its season date.  Please consider avoid consuming spoiled food giving a revolting odor, and other visual discoloration.(Click to Learn by Cooking Safely)

The food system begins from California farmers who pick, package, and deliver to our markets. Time is our own downfall to preserve the quality of our foods reaching its expiration. For example,  food trucks deliver our food in a preserved cool environment to reach the customer. However, once its on the shelves for customers to buy it there are unknown uncertainty to predict how long before a unwanted selection won’t be bought due to its appearanceThe NRDC reports food industries (restaurants, farms, non-profit organizations & more) are responsible for about 13 percent of all food waste. A higher possibility a customer wouldn’t eat a disformed vegetable base by its appearance convincing owners to preserve appealing foods. Follow my season calendar for summer to pick the best ingredients before it goes out of season.

A proposal to reduce food waste would consider eating produce that share similar ingredients to reduce leftover recipes to fulfill a single dish. Future discussion should be reviewed on the proposal. Learn More
